Central Idea: Performing religious rituals will not make us right with God.
 
Purpose: To challenge people to come to God through Christ alone.

  2. RELIGIOUS REGULATIONS LIMITED ACCESS TO GOD (9:6-7).
  3. RELIGIOUS SERVICE NEVER CLEANSED SINFUL HEARTS (9:8-10).

    Central Idea: God’s new contract renders His old contract obsolete.
     
    Purpose: To point people to new life in Christ.
    1. EXTERNAL CONTRACTS CANNOT GUARANTEE INTERNAL CHANGE (v.9).
    2. WHEN GOD CHANGES OUR HEARTS WE CAN OBEY HIS LAWS (v.10).
    3. SPIRITUAL UNITY COMES FROM KNOWING GOD PERSONALLY (v.11).
    4. WHEN GOD FORGIVES OUR SINS WE CAN BEGIN NEW LIVES (v.12).

    Central Idea: Christ guarantees the fulfillment of our new covenant.
     
    Purpose: To encourage believers with our security in Christ.
    1. Our new covenant is guaranteed by a permanent oath (7:20-21).
    2. Our new covenant is guaranteed by a living advocate (7:23-25).
    3. Our new covenant is guaranteed by a sufficient sacrifice (7:26-27).
    4. Our new covenant is guaranteed by a perfect priest (7:28).

    Central Idea: God sets aside the old law to bring us a better hope. (7:18-19)
     
    Purpose: To encourage believers not to pursue perfection but to draw near to God.
    1. Religious rules can never produce perfection (7:11-12).
    2. Our royal priest provides salvation (7:13-14).
    3. His endless life promises eternal assurance (7:15-17).
